Remove loose hair before washing

Shake washable items outdoors when practical, then work over the fabric with a reusable garment brush or roller. Short, overlapping passes are easier to control than scrubbing back and forth. Empty the tool before it becomes packed with hair.
For coats, pants and other flat fabrics, see our OXO FurLifter garment brush review. It is a manual, reusable option; we have not independently measured how much hair it removes.
Follow the garment and appliance instructions
Check every care label before using heat or a machine cycle. Do not apply a general dryer trick to wool, delicate, coated or heat-sensitive items unless the label permits it. Clean the dryer lint screen and any appliance pet-hair filter as directed by the manufacturer.
Samsung’s laundry guidance explains that dedicated pet-hair cycles and filters vary by machine, while Whirlpool recommends matching the cycle and temperature to the fabric and appliance manual. Those sources describe their own machines and should not be treated as universal settings.
If you are considering a laundry add-in, read our FurZapper two-pack review. It may be convenient, but it does not replace pretreating heavily covered fabric or following the washer and dryer instructions.
Use a controlled tool on upholstery

Test an inconspicuous area first. Work in one direction with light pressure so you can see whether the tool is lifting hair without roughening the textile. Use shorter strokes around seams, piping and corners, then collect the loosened fur by hand or with the appropriate vacuum attachment.
For car seats, stairs and fabric furniture, compare the Lilly Brush Mini Pet Hair Detailer. For broad, flat upholstered areas, the ChomChom reusable roller is another format to consider. Neither review claims that one tool is safe for every textile.
Loosen embedded hair before vacuuming carpet
Vacuum slowly in overlapping passes with the floor setting and attachment recommended for your carpet. If hair remains embedded, use a carpet-safe manual tool on a small test area to gather it into removable clumps, then vacuum again. Avoid aggressive scraping that distorts loops or pulls fibers.
The goal is not to force one tool onto every rug. High-pile, looped, delicate and handmade carpets can require different care, so follow the carpet maker’s instructions when available.
Reduce the amount that reaches fabric

Regular grooming, washable pet bedding and a consistent furniture-cleaning routine can reduce the loose fur that reaches clothing. Groom only in a way that suits the animal’s coat and skin, and stop if the pet shows discomfort or irritation.
For a long-haired dog grooming option, see our FURminator Large Long Hair review. It is a source-control tool, not a laundry or upholstery cleaner, and suitability depends on the pet’s coat and condition.
The five-minute version
- Separate heavily covered items.
- Shake and brush them while dry.
- Check the care label and appliance manual.
- Clean filters after the load as directed.
- Address the pet bed and shedding source regularly.
Frequently asked questions
Should clothes go straight into the washer?
Not when they are heavily covered. Remove loose hair first so less fur enters the load and appliance.
What is the best pet-hair remover?
There is no single best tool for every surface. Garment brushes suit flat clothing, detailers can reach upholstery edges, rollers cover broad fabric areas, and grooming tools address shedding before fur reaches the room.
Can one method work on clothes, couches and carpet?
A shared principle works: start dry and test gently. The actual tool and technique should change with the textile, pile, care label and appliance instructions.
Sources and research limits
This guide is research-based, not a controlled comparison. We did not measure fur removal, fabric wear or appliance performance. Product links lead to our exact-product reviews, which explain their own evidence limits.
Research sources include Samsung's pet-hair laundry guidance and Whirlpool's cycle-selection guidance. Manufacturer guidance is commercially interested and may be model-specific.
