Verdict: a small herb-growing hobby with clear limits

The white Click & Grow Smart Garden 3 is a sensible candidate for someone who wants to grow a few herbs indoors without assembling a separate light, planter and watering setup. The three planting positions keep the project manageable. That same limit makes it a less convincing purchase if your main aim is supplying large quantities of herbs for frequent cooking.

Treat it as a compact growing hobby, not a promise to replace supermarket purchases. You pay for the appliance, replacement pods and electricity, and plants still need observation and harvesting. This review is based on specifications, official instructions and dated editorial context; we have not grown a crop in this unit.

Reasons to consider it

  • Compact three-pod format
  • Automatic daily light cycle
  • Includes three basil starter pods

Trade-offs

  • Small planting capacity
  • Replacement pods add recurring cost
  • Plants still need checking and maintenance

Facts: white SGS1US with three basil pods

The selected Amazon listing is B01MRVMKQH, model SGS1US, in White with three basil pods. The standard kit includes the reservoir, LED lamp, two extension arms, three plant cups and germination domes. It is the Smart Garden 3, not a nine-pod garden or a special herb-variety bundle.

The footprint is 30 × 12 cm, with height increasing from about 21 to 47 cm as extensions are added. Measure clearance beneath cabinets for the mature setup, not only the unextended lamp. The official specifications list an 8 W light and a 1.5 L tank; the current setup guidance recommends roughly 1.3 L and following the float indicator.

Features: automatic lighting without remote control

The lamp runs a 16-hour-on, 8-hour-off cycle. Plugging it in starts that cycle; the support guidance recommends starting in the morning. This matters in an open-plan apartment or near a bedroom, where an evening start can leave the grow light shining through the night.

No app is required to operate this standard Smart Garden 3. Click & Grow offers an optional app for plant information and reminders, but that should not be confused with Bluetooth lamp control supplied on a different Pro model. The core SG3 routine remains checking water, observing growth and adjusting the lamp height.

The included domes and cups are reusable. Keeping those small parts together after germination makes the next planting easier and avoids unnecessary replacement purchases. Plan a place to store them before they disappear into an already crowded kitchen drawer.

Research: useful coverage, not measured viral demand

Good Housekeeping included the Smart Garden 3 among additional tested models in its April 2026 indoor-garden article. It described compact simplicity and noted the three-pod limitation. The SG3 was not one of that article’s five main picks.

That is editorial context rather than proof that this exact white Amazon kit is currently viral. Our assessment focuses on ownership: how much room you can spare, which plants you want, and whether you enjoy tending them. Photos of a full basil canopy are manufacturer examples, not a promised yield or a result from our testing.

Compare this with a simple pot in a genuinely suitable growing location before paying for the integrated light. Conversely, if you lack such a location, the included lamp may be the part of the system that has the most practical value for you.

Safety and care: check water, plants and electrical parts

Fill according to the indicator rather than automatically pouring the nominal tank capacity into an occupied reservoir. Click & Grow says not to raise the float above the lid. Its current advice also recommends against leaving the garden unattended for longer than a week, even though water consumption varies by plant and growth stage.

Keep electrical connections dry and place the garden securely away from accidental knocks. Remove the transparent germination domes once sprouts are visible, keeping the reusable cups and U-shaped lids in place. Start Smart Garden 3 without lamp extensions; add the first extension when the plants are nearly touching the light, before the tips can burn. Keep checking growth and water even though the light schedule is automatic.

Clean between planting cycles using the maker’s directions. Hand-rinsing the reservoir with warm water and a little detergent, followed by thorough rinsing, is described in current support guidance. Dishwasher permission applies only to specified disassembled tank parts and cups at no more than 50°C/120°F. The lamp, domes, U-shaped lids and wicks must stay out of the dishwasher; dishwasher-caused failures are excluded from the stated warranty.

Buying: plan for the second planting

Check replacement pod options and costs before checkout, especially if you want herbs other than basil. Three positions are easy to understand but leave little room for a large simultaneous selection. Avoid calculating guaranteed grocery savings from a promotional photograph or suggested harvest schedule.

Questions: everyday ownership

Can I change when the light comes on?

Yes. The cycle starts when plugged in. Current support instructions say to unplug for at least ten seconds before reconnecting at your preferred starting time.

Will it water plants while I travel?

The reservoir supplies water through the wicks, but the maker advises against leaving it unattended beyond one week. Arrange someone to check it for longer trips.

Does it grow plants from ordinary packets of seed?

The starter kit is supplied for the brand’s plant pods. Check the maker’s current experimental-pod options if you want to use your own seeds; do not assume loose soil is an equivalent refill.
