Verdict: a practical option when storage space matters
The green COSCO Shifter makes the most sense for someone who wants one compact carrier for occasional boxes and household supplies. Its ability to change shape is useful when a shopping trip, storage-room clear-out, and delivery each call for a different arrangement. Our recommendation is conditional: first check the route, the load’s footprint, and the space where the cart will live.
This is a research-based review of model 12222PBG1E, Amazon ASIN B00LMH8CCS. We have not load-tested it, timed the conversion, assessed rolling resistance, or measured long-term wear. The buying case rests on the documented design and specifications, with the practical judgments below identified as our assessment.
For a buyer with smooth, level routes and limited storage, it belongs on the shortlist. For a job dominated by stairs, large appliances, rough ground, or demanding daily transport, choose equipment specifically suited to that job. A headline capacity alone cannot settle that choice.
Reasons to consider it
- Two working configurations in one folding carrier
- Flat storage shape can be useful in a closet or vehicle
- No loose conversion pins or tools to keep track of
- Published dimensions make a pre-purchase fit check possible
Trade-offs
- Handle fit needs checking, especially in cart mode
- Open-frame support will not suit every load shape
- Folding joints require careful hand placement
- No hands-on performance or durability testing in this review

Facts: the green model and its published measurements
COSCO identifies this green version as 12222PBG1E and specifies a steel frame, a 300 lb maximum load, and a product weight of 15.4 lb. These are manufacturer figures, not our measurements. The two working positions are an upright two-wheel hand truck and a horizontal four-wheel cart; the folded position is for storage.
The current green-model dimension graphic is the clearest size reference we found. It labels the folded unit 31.5 inches long, 16 inches wide, and 3.9 inches thick. It shows the cart at 32.5 inches long by 16 inches wide by 30.4 inches high, and the upright handle height at 49 inches. Other listings give different measurements, so leave clearance and confirm dimensions with the seller when a tight fit is essential.

Features: what the two positions change
COSCO describes conversion without tools or removable pins. Our practical interpretation is that the two layouts give you a choice about how to support a load: stacked boxes may suit an upright arrangement, while a broader, stable package may be easier to position across the cart. Either way, compare the actual load with the support beneath it.
COSCO’s brand answer on Target describes the four-wheel carrying area as approximately 12 by 24 inches and notes that it is not a continuous solid platform. Small feet, narrow planter bases, and loose items deserve particular attention. The same brand Q&A gives wheel diameters of about 4.96 inches for the larger wheels and 2.44 inches for the smaller casters. We have not tested how they roll over thresholds.
The 12222 does not have the 12225’s added extendable handle. COSCO confirms that distinction in its brand answer, and its separate 12225YGB1E page describes the extension as useful for taller users. If handle height is your main concern, compare those models before choosing a color.

Research: measure the opening, then the storage space
For trunk storage, start with the 31.5 × 16-inch folded footprint and 3.9-inch thickness shown in COSCO’s current graphic. Measure the narrowest part of the trunk opening as well as the available space inside. A large cargo volume does not guarantee that a rigid folded cart will pass through the opening or lie where you want it.
A useful planning exercise is to mark the footprint on cardboard and check your intended storage orientation. Allow extra room for trim, a raised loading lip, other luggage, and your hands. This is a suggested fit check, not a vehicle compatibility test; we have not tried the Shifter in any car.
We compared the exact Amazon identification, current COSCO product information and imagery, brand-authored retail answers, the warranty document, and safety sources. One material conflict emerged: Target’s older description says the folded unit is only 13 inches high. That does not agree with the current manufacturer graphic. We use the latter for planning and do not promise a precise fit.
We also found an illustrated 12222 quick-start guide by Sydnee Jones. It describes the folding sequence and warns about pinch points, but it is not a verified current COSCO instruction manual. Follow the safety labels and instructions supplied with your unit; ask COSCO for the correct instructions if they are missing.

Safety: capacity is only one part of the decision
Treat 300 lb as the stated equipment limit, never as a target for every trip. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety explains that load shape, floor condition, wheel size, route, and the force needed to start and stop all affect safe handling. Slopes and damaged surfaces can increase the effort substantially. Choose a lighter load or different equipment when you cannot maintain control.
Learn the conversion sequence with the cart empty, following its labels. Keep hands clear of moving hinges and folding wheel assemblies. The illustrated 12222 guide specifically warns that the folding wheels can snap back and create pinch points. If the mechanism binds, stop and consult the correct instructions rather than forcing it.
We do not recommend buying this model as a stair-climbing solution. Nor does the weight rating establish that a refrigerator, washer, or other appliance can be safely supported and secured. Those jobs require a separate assessment of the load, restraint system, route, and equipment.
The often-seen 2015 COSCO hand-truck recall names 12-301 ABL and 12-301 ABL1, manufactured from January 2009 through October 2011. Those identifiers differ from the 12222PBG1E reviewed here. Do not attach that recall to this model merely because both are COSCO hand trucks; match the label and check current notices when buying used.

Buying: confirm the model and read the warranty detail
Check that the selected offer is the green 12222PBG1E under ASIN B00LMH8CCS. Review the seller, condition, delivery charge, and return terms at checkout. This page deliberately does not freeze a retailer price, stock status, customer rating, or discount into the review.
COSCO advertises a five-year limited warranty, but the linked Rev. C 2025 warranty document has a significant exception: wheels and casters are among the components covered for one year. It covers defects in materials or workmanship for the original retail purchaser, requires proof of purchase, excludes misuse or abuse, and places transportation charges on the consumer. Read the full terms before relying on the headline.
Our buying checklist is simple: confirm your load can be supported, plan the route, check handle comfort, and measure storage access. If you will use it only for one move, compare the total cost with renting suitable equipment. If you need an adjustable handle, investigate the separate 12225YGB1E rather than assuming every Shifter has that feature.

Questions: the details to settle before ordering
These answers apply to the green 12222PBG1E. Check a different model’s own specifications and instructions rather than carrying these answers across the Shifter range.
How much weight can the COSCO Shifter carry?
COSCO lists a maximum load of 300 lb. We have not verified it through load testing. The size and stability of the load, the route, and your ability to control it still matter.
What is the folded size of the 12222PBG1E?
The current manufacturer graphic shows 31.5 × 16 × 3.9 inches. Older listings conflict, so use that as a planning reference and confirm a critical fit before ordering.
Will it fit in my car trunk?
Measure the trunk opening and the clear storage space. Leave room to maneuver the folded cart past trim and the loading lip. We have not tested it in a particular vehicle.
Does the green 12222 have an extendable handle?
It lacks the added extendable-handle feature of the separate 12225 model. COSCO identifies 12225YGB1E as its extendable-handle version.
Is it suitable for stairs or moving a refrigerator?
We would choose task-specific equipment for those jobs. A load below the weight limit can still be unstable or difficult to control; the capacity is not proof of stair-climbing or appliance-moving suitability.
Does it need tools to convert?
COSCO describes conversion without tools or removable pins. Follow the unit’s labels and instructions, and keep your fingers away from moving joints.
Are the wheels covered for five years?
The current linked COSCO five-year limited warranty lists wheels and casters under a one-year exception. Proof of purchase and the other warranty conditions apply.
