Croco Dial Review: Five Modes, but Not Five Steps Every Time

The rotating dial consolidates sharpening functions, but choosing the right mode matters more than following a universal three-step routine.

Our research-based verdict

Croco Dial has a clear organizational advantage: one body provides separate settings for routine sharpening, heavier restoration, polishing, bread knives and scissors. That may be useful if your drawer contains several compatible cutting tools and you are willing to learn which setting each needs. It is less persuasive as a promise that every dull blade can be fixed by the same sequence of pulls.

This review covers the standard green model, SKU 18435, not the black Diamond Bite edition. We would consider it for ordinary household maintenance after checking the knife maker’s instructions. We would not choose it simply to experiment on an expensive specialty blade. We have not measured edge sharpness, metal removal, sharpening speed or long-term wear.

Reasons to consider it

  • Five labeled modes in one countertop body.
  • Separate bread-knife and scissors settings.
  • No battery, charger or powered grinding wheel.

Trade-offs

  • RESTORE is not intended for every sharpening session.
  • Serrations and scissors require their own technique.
  • Compatibility is narrower than “every blade.”

The green standard version

BulbHead identifies the reviewed unit as 18435 and describes tungsten-carbide and ceramic sharpening components. Its rotating dial selects a function; it does not provide a user-specified bevel angle. Non-slip pads are part of the design, but they do not eliminate the need to stabilize the device and control the blade.

The manufacturer’s current instructions list the sharpener, storage bag and manual. The black Diamond Bite option is a separate edition with different advertised abrasive coatings. Do not transfer its performance claims to this green model, or assume a photograph showing both editions means that two sharpeners are included.

Start with SHARPEN, not an automatic restoration cycle

The sales description emphasizes a three-stage sequence, but the current instruction sheet makes an important distinction: SHARPEN is the starting point for most everyday kitchen knives. RESTORE is for very dull or damaged edges and should be used sparingly. POLISH is optional rather than a required daily step. That makes mode selection a meaningful part of ownership, not just a dial you turn through from left to right.

The practical question is how often your knives need maintenance and whether you can recognize when a more aggressive step is warranted. More passes are not automatically better. Someone who wants a precisely controlled edge geometry or restoration of a valuable damaged knife may prefer professional service or a sharpening system explicitly suited to that knife.

Compatibility deserves more attention than the demonstrations

We checked the current BulbHead offer, official instructions and Global Shop Direct’s edition guidance on October 16, 2026. The distributor describes compatibility with most stainless-steel knives and does not recommend ceramic blades. Its guidance also cautions buyers to check specialty knives with their manufacturer. A broad list of kitchen uses should not override the requirements of an unusual bevel, coating or material.

Bread knives have a dedicated mode, but serration orientation matters. Scissors are not simply two knife blades to feed through a slot: the instructions describe one-blade treatment and exclude serrated scissors. We have not established how well the tool works on a particular scissor geometry or tooth pattern. Advertising demonstrations cannot resolve those individual compatibility questions.

Control the blade and clean away debris

For knife sharpening, the current manual calls for light, one-direction heel-to-tip pulls rather than forceful sawing. Keep fingers outside the blade’s travel path, work on a dry stable surface and do not test an edge with a fingertip. Clean the knife before and after sharpening. These precautions matter even when the unit’s feet feel secure.

The sharpener is not dishwasher-safe and should not be submerged. Follow the included cleaning instructions rather than treating abrasive slots like washable cutlery. Keep the device and its drawstring bag away from children. If your packaged instructions differ from the online version, resolve that difference with the seller before using an unfamiliar setting.

Match the edition and your actual knives

Before ordering, list the knives and scissors you intend to maintain, then check their material, edge construction and care guidance. A sharpener that suits your everyday chef’s knife may still be inappropriate for a ceramic paring knife or specialized shears. The benefit is consolidation only when the modes actually match your tools.

Common buying questions

Should every knife go through all three straight-edge stages?

No. The current manual starts most everyday knives at SHARPEN, reserves RESTORE for appropriate heavier work and makes POLISH optional.

Is Diamond Bite the same reviewed product?

No. This review covers green SKU 18435, not the separately marketed black edition.

Can it sharpen ceramic knives or serrated scissors?

Do not assume so. Ceramic knives are not recommended in the distributor guidance, and the manual excludes serrated scissors.
