Verdict: a sensible personal speaker if small size is the priority
The JBL Go 4 makes sense as a compact companion for listening near a desk, picnic blanket or hotel bed. The black version is easy to identify by its orange-outlined JBL logo, small carry loop and side controls. Its appeal is portability and straightforward wireless playback, rather than the output expected from a much larger speaker.
This is a research-based review of Black Go 4, model JBLGO4BLKAM and Amazon ASIN B0CTNWBT1Z. We have not measured its sound, battery life or water resistance. If your priority is deeper bass, a noisy outdoor gathering or long playback without recharging, compare larger options before deciding that the smallest design is best.
Reasons to consider it
- Very compact and lightweight
- Physical playback controls
- App equalizer and compatible speaker linking
Trade-offs
- Small-speaker output limits
- Seven-hour claim may be short for long outings
- Wet port must dry before charging

Facts: use the technical sheet for dimensions and weight
JBL’s technical sheet lists the speaker’s actual weight separately from its packaging weight. This distinction matters: 0.69 pound is gross packaged weight, while the unit itself is 0.42 pound. The sheet also gives more precise dimensions than rounded retail graphics. The package lists a USB Type-C cable, quick-start guide and safety paperwork.

Features: useful controls and flexible sound settings
The top has separate volume and playback controls, while power, Bluetooth and Auracast buttons sit on the side. This makes basic operation available without opening a phone app. The small loop helps with carrying, although it is not the built-in carabiner found on the different JBL Clip family.
JBL Portable adds equalizer adjustments, product support and software updates. EQ can change the balance of highs, mids and lows, but it cannot remove the physical limits of the small enclosure. Start by deciding whether you need nearby personal listening or room-wide sound; those are different purchasing goals.
JBL advertises up to seven hours of music, plus up to two more with Playtime Boost. The additional mode changes playback behavior. Plan charging around your intended volume and time away from power rather than treating the largest advertised number as a guaranteed minimum.

Research: historical enthusiasm with real size tradeoffs
What Hi-Fi reviewed the Go 4 on August 29, 2024, praising its compact presentation while noting output and runtime limitations. Its reviewer also reported a stereo synchronization issue in their samples and a thinner bass balance with Playtime Boost. Those are attributed historical observations, not tests performed for this article or proof that every current unit behaves identically.
That coverage demonstrates editorial interest, not verified present-day virality. JBL now also lists Go 5, so Go 4 should not be described as the newest generation. Compare current offers and the features you need before choosing an older model purely because a past review liked it.

Safety and care: water resistance has a charging boundary
JBL rates Go 4 IP67, but explicitly requires a completely dry charging port before connecting power. Disconnect cables before water exposure. The rating is not permission to charge at a pool edge or use a wet cable. The guide warns that salt, pool chemicals and debris can damage seals or connectors over time; rinse them off as directed, then let the speaker become completely dry and clean before charging.
Keep playback volume sensible, particularly close to someone’s ears. Place the speaker securely rather than balancing it where it can fall into water or onto a person. Avoid treating waterproof marketing as a guarantee against every liquid, impact or depth. If the unit or battery looks damaged, stop using it and contact support.

Buying: compare the exact generation and connection needs
Choose the black Go 4 if an easy-to-pack personal speaker meets your needs at the current final price. Check that the listing still says Go 4 and Black; Go 3, Go 5 and Clip models have different specifications. If stereo is the plan, include the cost of two units and confirm the supported pairing arrangement.
Review seller identity, shipping, returns and the final total before checkout. We do not promise a live price or availability. A photo of several speakers illustrates possible use and does not mean the one-speaker offer includes a set.

Questions: pairing, runtime and charging
Can one Go 4 provide stereo sound?
It is a single compact speaker. JBL supports pairing two Go 4 units for stereo; the second speaker is a separate purchase.
Will it link with any older JBL speaker?
Do not assume that. Go 4 uses Auracast for supported multi-speaker connections. An older speaker’s different connection system does not establish compatibility.
Does Playtime Boost guarantee nine hours?
No. JBL advertises up to two extra hours through a changed playback mode. Volume, content and settings affect runtime, and the listening balance can change.
Can I charge it after it gets wet?
Only after the charging port is completely dry. IP67 does not make wet charging safe. Keep the charger and connected cables away from water.
