Verdict: broad gripping range with a clear finish-care tradeoff

The KNIPEX Cobra 87 01 250 is worth considering for a household toolkit when you regularly grip pipes, awkward fittings, or nuts of different sizes. Its push-button adjustment is the main reason to choose it over a basic slip-joint design. The limitation is equally important: aggressive teeth favor grip rather than protecting decorative surfaces.

This research-based review covers the nominal 10-inch, plastic-coated-handle model under ASIN B000X4J2H0. We have not measured its grip, compared hand fatigue, or tested long-term wear. Our recommendation follows the verified design and capacity, with no claim that one plier replaces every wrench.

Reasons to consider it

  • 25 push-button jaw settings
  • Separate published pipe and nut capacities
  • Compact plastic-coated handles
  • Serrated jaws for varied shapes

Trade-offs

  • Teeth can mark finishes
  • Not electrically insulated
  • No calibrated torque control
  • Handle clearance still matters

Facts: the exact 250 mm Cobra

KNIPEX’s model-specific datasheet lists a 250 mm tool weighing 335 g, with a polished head, grey atramentized body, and non-slip plastic-coated handles. Amazon’s model field matches 87 01 250. Other Cobra sizes and grip versions are separate products even when a retailer groups their reviews together.

The two capacity figures describe different geometries: 50 mm pipe diameter and 46 mm nuts. Do not use a larger Cobra’s specification simply because a gallery image discusses the entire range. The reviewed tool has 25 adjustment positions.

Features: adjustment before leverage

Pressing the joint button lets the movable jaw be set directly against the workpiece. The useful implication is a closer initial fit with a manageable handle spread. Choose the setting before applying load, then make sure the joint is engaged. Extra jaw opening is not a reason to grip only the edge of a fitting.

The box joint supports the moving half from both sides. KNIPEX also describes hardened teeth and self-locking behavior on pipes and nuts. Those are design claims, not results from our testing. The tooth orientation matters; resistance should help the jaws bite rather than encourage the tool to slide.

A pinch guard limits how closely the handles approach each other. It does not protect fingers left between jaws or against nearby pipework. The tool still requires controlled positioning, especially in a crowded cabinet.

Research: when pliers are the right choice

For our assessment, the relevant question is what you need to hold. Serrated adjustable jaws make sense on suitably robust, accessible workpieces where surface marks are acceptable. For a correctly sized hex fastener, a well-fitting socket or wrench may give a more appropriate contact surface. For exposed plated fittings, finish protection should drive the choice.

The Cobra is also different from KNIPEX’s smooth-jaw Pliers Wrench family. Do not buy this model expecting parallel smooth jaws. Likewise, the plastic-coated 87 01 version should not be confused with a comfort-grip or insulated variant.

We verified identity against the exact Amazon listing and dimensions against the manufacturer datasheet. We did not use customer stars as a durability test. A model-specific operating manual was not established; the datasheet and manufacturer handle guidance define the evidence used here.

Safety: standard grips provide no live-work authorization

This is not an insulated tool. KNIPEX distinguishes comfort coatings from specially marked electrical insulation. Do not use the 87 01 250 on energized electrical parts or assume the red handles make electrical work safe.

Inspect the jaws, joint, and handles before use. Keep your free hand away from the workpiece’s likely movement if it releases, and use eye protection where debris could be dislodged. Do not add a pipe to the handles or use the pliers as a hammer.

Gripping force can crush soft tubing or scar chrome, paint, and plastic. Stop if the tool slips or the component deforms. For plumbing repairs, isolate the relevant supply and follow the fixture’s procedure; a strong grip alone does not establish that a fitting should be tightened further.

Buying: match the model to your actual jobs

Choose this Cobra if you want a general-purpose toothed gripping tool with adjustable reach across ordinary fittings. Choose a finish-friendly wrench for decorative hardware, or a different size when access and capacity demand it.

Before ordering, confirm 87 01 250, the single-tool quantity, and the red plastic-coated handles. Check the seller, final total, delivery, and return terms. Prices and availability change, so the link below is a route to the current offer rather than a price promise.

Questions: practical buying answers

Is this an insulated electrical tool?

No. The 87 01 250 has standard plastic-coated handles. Their color does not establish electrical protection. Keep this tool away from energized work.

Is the capacity 2 inches for everything?

No. KNIPEX specifies a pipe diameter capacity of 50 mm, nominally 2 inches, and a separate 46 mm capacity for nuts. Workpiece shape and room around the fitting also matter.

Does self-locking mean it replaces locking pliers?

No. The Cobra’s tooth geometry grips under appropriately directed load. It does not have the locking-handle mechanism of conventional locking pliers and should not be treated as an unattended clamp.

Will it mark a polished faucet?

The jaws are serrated and can damage decorative finishes. A suitable smooth-jaw wrench or other finish-approved tool is usually the better starting point for exposed hardware.

Is a smaller Cobra a better household choice?

Possibly, if most work is in cramped spaces and within the smaller tool’s capacity. The 250 mm version offers useful range, but the handle still needs operating clearance.
