Verdict: appealing for loose kernels and compact storage
The Lékué Standard Red PopCorn Maker is a sensible option if you already have a microwave, prefer loose kernels to packaged bags and want a reusable bowl that folds down between movie nights. Its main advantage is the routine: measure kernels, cook in the microwave and use the same bowl for serving once it is safe to handle.
This research-based review covers Standard Red model 881640, Amazon ASIN B00NF9CT0C. We have not tested popping yield, scorching, odor retention or durability. The recommendation is conditional on fit and attentive cooking. Someone wanting a large batch with minimal timing adjustment may prefer a different preparation method.
Reasons to consider it

- Uses loose kernels and your existing microwave
- Bowl can serve as the eating vessel

Facts: Standard Red, not the Mini bowl
The official US page identifies SKU 881640 and a 2.8-litre bowl. The width is about 8.1 inches; the compact 2.4-inch height shown in specifications corresponds to folded storage, not the clearance you should allow while popping. Open the bowl fully and check that it fits and rotates freely in your particular microwave.
Capacity is easily misunderstood here. A 2.8-litre container does not take 2.8 litres of unpopped kernels. Use the bowl’s marks and the supplied preparation directions. Likewise, “two or three servings” is a manufacturer serving suggestion, not a promise that every household will consider one batch sufficient.

Features: fewer separate pieces of equipment
The foldable silicone body removes the need to store a separate powered popper. That can be useful in a small kitchen, especially if popcorn is occasional rather than a daily batch-cooking project. You still need cupboard space for a broad bowl and its lid, even when the base is collapsed.
The ability to choose kernels and seasonings gives you control over the recipe. It does not make every result healthier, fat-free or additive-free. Compare the complete routine with what you already do, including measuring, waiting for cooling and washing. A reusable bowl only earns its space if that routine feels convenient enough to repeat.

Research: historical family testing with clear limits
La Vanguardia published a review of the Standard 2.8-litre popper in March 2023. Its writer describes a small number of trials and warns about over-browning when cooking runs too long. That is historical evidence about the standard product family in another market, not our own test or current US exact-ASIN sales evidence.
We checked the current manufacturer identity and specifications against Amazon and reviewed the English instructions in an older Lékué brochure hosted by Williams Sonoma. The brochure’s general microwave-fit, steam and cleaning warnings are useful context. The instructions shipped with the current unit should take priority over an older family document or a social clip.

Safety: watch the cooking and respect hot steam
The brochure describes a lid placed without pressing it into a sealed fit, warns about escaping steam and advises protection when removing the bowl. Wash before first use. Avoid sharp utensils, direct heat and the microwave’s grill mode. Follow the included directions for the current bowl and microwave rather than translating its silicone temperature range into unrestricted appliance compatibility.
Stay nearby while popping and stop if the food begins scorching. Different microwaves, quantities and kernels need different timing, and some kernels may remain unpopped. Do not chase a perfect yield by endlessly extending a batch. Let the bowl cool enough for safe handling and clean it according to its dishwasher-compatible care instructions.

Buying: check expanded fit and the exact offer
Measure your microwave’s usable space with the bowl expanded and the lid in place. Also consider the batch size you actually want and where you will store the lid. If you are replacing bagged popcorn, compare loose-kernel cost and cleanup using your own habits rather than assuming a universal savings figure.

Questions: timing, oil and microwave fit
Is the 2.8-litre capacity the amount of kernels to add?
No. It describes the bowl. Use the marked kernel-fill references and the instructions supplied with your unit; popcorn needs expansion space.
Will it finish in exactly three minutes?
No fixed time is reliable for every microwave and kernel batch. The manufacturer’s marketing gives a short preparation time, while its brochure acknowledges variation. Monitor cooking to avoid scorching.
Does it need oil?
Amazon advertises no oil needed, while manufacturer recipes include optional-style flavor additions and an oil-based method. Follow your supplied recipe. Adding oil, butter, sugar or salt changes the finished food; the bowl does not guarantee a particular nutritional result.
Can it go under a microwave grill?
The reviewed Lékué brochure says not to use the microwave grill setting, direct flame or a direct heat source. Microwave compatibility is not blanket approval for every cooking mode.
Is this the small Mini version?
No. This review covers the red Standard 2.8-litre bowl. A 0.7-litre Mini or multipack is a different purchase.
