Hide-A-Squirrel Medium Review: Supervised Plush Play

Verdict

The Outward Hound Hide-A-Squirrel Medium is worth considering for a dog that enjoys nosing toys out of hiding places and carrying soft plush pieces. It gives you a simple activity to reset together, without batteries or a food reward. The strongest reason to skip it is a dog that quickly shreds plush or swallows the pieces.

This research-based review covers the current Medium Amazon selection, ASIN B0002I0O60, model OH-31011 or 31011, UPC 700603310116. We have not tested it with dogs or measured durability, engagement time, or cleaning performance. A puzzle label does not make a plush toy safe for unattended chewing.

Facts

Size names need special care here. Older sources have called model 31011 Large, while the current Amazon and matching-UPC Target listings call it Medium. Amazon’s title and bullet dimensions also differ. Match the model and UPC, inspect the delivered toy, and judge both the log and removable pieces against your dog’s size and play habits.

Features

The central idea is reusable hide-and-seek: place the squirrels inside the soft log and let the dog work out how to retrieve them. You can make the first attempt easier by leaving a piece partly visible, then reset when your dog succeeds. That is a suggested way to introduce the activity, not a promise about how quickly any dog will learn it.

The three removable squirrels also allow short retrieval or carrying games. That flexibility is useful when the dog prefers one part of the set over the whole puzzle. You will need to keep track of all the pieces and choose when play ends; the toy cannot reset itself or judge whether a damaged squirrel is still safe.

Compared with a food-dispensing puzzle, this design does not require loading treats or washing out a food compartment. Its limitations come from the plush construction: seams, stuffing, and squeakers are potential weak points for persistent chewers. A dog that ignores squeaky fabric toys may simply have little interest in it.

Research

The manufacturer’s current page groups several Hide A toys and sizes, so it supplies useful family-level safety instructions rather than a clean model-specific specification sheet. Amazon identifies the model, while Target independently corroborates UPC 700603310116 and the Medium label. We did not find a separate model-specific manual.

Target owner reviews illustrate the central trade-off. Some describe dogs enjoying the squirrels or retrieving them; others report the log tearing quickly, including an April 2025 verified-purchase review. These are individual experiences rather than a representative failure rate, but they reinforce the need to judge the dog’s play style instead of assuming plush durability.

Historical gift-guide exposure and marketplace buying indicators explain why this product is a useful research candidate. They do not demonstrate current virality, and we have not used a customer-star average as our own score. Engagement varies, so claims about hours of play or treating anxiety are not part of this recommendation.

Safety

Outward Hound says to supervise every session, choose a suitable size, inspect for damage, and remove and replace a damaged toy. Follow that guidance for each squirrel as well as the log. Loose stuffing, squeakers, and separated fabric can be swallowed; stop play as soon as damage appears rather than waiting until the toy falls apart.

This is a dog toy, and the manufacturer says to keep it away from children. Do not leave it in a crate as an unattended distraction. If your dog destroys and ingests soft toys, select a different kind of supervised activity suited to that behavior.

Target lists spot or wipe cleaning for this matching-UPC product. Check the delivered care label before using a washer, dryer, detergent, or disinfectant. Remove the pieces for inspection, let cleaned fabric dry thoroughly, and discard any part that no longer has sound seams. Cleaning does not restore a damaged toy’s strength.

Buying

Confirm that the offer is the complete current Medium set with a log and three squirrels, rather than an XL set, another animal design, or a replacement-only pack. The October 12, 2026 Amazon page showed Add to cart and Buy Now controls with Amazon.com as seller; other-offer information was also present. That is positive purchase evidence without a checkout or delivery guarantee.

Use the exact identifiers to avoid older size-name confusion. Check price, condition, delivery, and return terms for the selected offer. The best buying question is whether you can supervise a gentle hide-and-seek game, not whether the product name promises a level of enrichment that every dog will experience.
