Verdict: useful reach for cookware that needs a gentle utensil

The OXO Good Grips 12-Inch Tongs with Silicone Heads are worth considering when you want to turn and serve food without putting a bare metal tip against a nonstick pan. The longer format makes sense for a wide skillet or a deeper serving vessel. For small bowls and close-up work, a shorter pair can be easier to position.

This research-based review covers model 1101980, ASIN B003L0OYK8. We have not tested spring force, wet-food grip, coating wear, or heat exposure. Our recommendation rests on the head material, dimensions, and locking design rather than an invented kitchen trial. Decide first whether you need this length; silicone alone does not make every pair of tongs equally manageable.

Reasons to consider it

  • Silicone heads intended for nonstick cookware
  • Lock closed for drawer storage
  • Soft grip areas and thumb rests
  • Dishwasher-safe construction

Trade-offs

  • Longer tool needs more storage space
  • Silicone needs inspection for wear
  • Grip force and durability not independently tested

Facts: the 12-inch name and the listed overall dimensions

OXO names this the 12-inch model but lists overall dimensions of 14 × 1 × 2 inches. Its UK page reports the corresponding length as 35.5 cm. Treat the product name as the size designation and allow for the published full footprint when measuring a drawer. We have not independently measured the tool.

The construction combines stainless steel with black silicone heads and non-slip grip areas. Amazon’s product description specifies a head heat resistance of up to 600°F and describes the pull-tab lock. That temperature is a head-material claim, not an oven rating for the entire utensil or permission to place it over a flame.

Features: a broad gripping face and a storage lock

The scalloped edges give the jaws several contact points around food. Their broad faces are a reasonable design for picking up portions and tossing vegetables, although shape alone cannot tell us how firmly they hold something slippery. Delicate food may still need support from a turner rather than pressure from two sides.

The rear tab locks the arms together for storage. This reduces the space an open pair takes in a drawer and gives the tool a defined closed position. Check that the lock releases and the jaws move freely before bringing it to a hot pan; a storage feature is useful only when it does not interrupt a controlled cooking motion.

OXO emphasizes comfortable spring tension. We treat that as a design intention rather than a measured result. If repeated squeezing is difficult for you, try the opening range and resistance when possible instead of assuming a soft outer grip will solve the effort involved.

Research: when the shorter model is the better comparison

The closest alternative is OXO’s 9-inch silicone-head pair, model 1101880. OXO describes the same basic material combination and locking concept, but lists a shorter overall footprint. Choosing between them is mainly a reach-and-control decision, not a reason to assume the longer pair grips food more securely.

Our practical reading is to favor this longer model when your hand needs to stay farther from the center of a wide pan. Favor a shorter utensil for compact serving dishes and jobs where precise placement matters. Neither option replaces heat protection for your hand, and reaching across a burner remains something to avoid.

We checked the manufacturer’s US and UK listings and the exact Amazon ASIN. Product-family photos can show both lengths; the two-size image below illustrates that distinction and does not mean a two-piece set is included. No customer review average or advertised discount was used as an editorial score.

Safety and care: protect both the silicone and the pan

OXO identifies the silicone heads as suitable for nonstick finishes, but your cookware’s utensil instructions still take priority. Inspect for tears, loose material, or an exposed metal edge. Do not scrape with a damaged head or use the jaws to cut food against a coated cooking surface.

Keep the tool away from direct flame, heating elements, and unattended contact with a hot pan. A maximum material temperature does not tell you how long exposure is safe or how hot the handle may become. Use an appropriate utensil rest between turns.

The tongs are dishwasher safe according to OXO. Open them enough for cleaning water to reach the jaws and joint, remove stuck food, and follow the supplied care directions. Check that the hinge and lock are clean and operating normally before storing.

Buying: check length, head material, and quantity

Choose the 12-inch silicone-head version if its reach addresses a real cooking need and it fits your storage. Check that the listing says silicone, not nylon or bare stainless steel, and that the selected length is 12 inches. The reviewed offer is for the identified single model; a family comparison photo is not a packing list.

Questions: reach, heat, and cleaning

Are they safe for nonstick pans?

OXO specifies the silicone heads for nonstick cookware. Use intact heads and follow the pan maker’s care guidance.

Does 600°F mean I can leave them on a burner?

No. The listing’s heat claim concerns the heads. It does not authorize direct flame, unattended hot-pan contact, or putting the entire utensil in an oven.

Why does OXO list 14 inches?

The product is named as a 12-inch pair, while OXO’s specification field gives a 14-inch overall length. Use the larger published footprint for storage planning.
