Verdict: a straightforward tape for ordinary measuring
The STANLEY PowerLock 33-425 is a sensible choice when you want a familiar 25-foot tape with a manual blade lock and clear physical markings. It suits furniture checks, basic room measurements and routine layout work. Consider it when a simple tool you can keep close at hand matters more than electronic readouts or an especially long unsupported reach.
This is a research-based review of 33-425, Amazon ASIN B00002X2GQ. We have not tested calibration, drop resistance, lock creep or coating wear. The recommendation is for its documented format and features; it is not a claim that this tape outperforms competing models or remains accurate after damage.
Reasons to consider it
- 25-foot measuring length
- Manual blade lock
- Sliding Tru-Zero end hook
- Mylar-coated blade and belt clip
Trade-offs
- 7-foot stated standout is modest for long unsupported work
- Chrome finish does not mean an all-metal case
- Imperial model requires care when shopping variants
- No independent accuracy or durability test here

Facts: 25-foot length, 1-inch blade
The reviewed model has a 25-foot blade that is 1 inch wide. STANLEY describes a Mylar polyester blade coating, chrome-plated ABS housing, manual lock and corrosion-resistant Tru-Zero hook. The distinction between chrome finish and solid metal matters: the official material description is ABS.
The manufacturer lists 7 feet of blade standout, plus 16-inch and 19.2-inch framing marks. Standout is the unsupported blade extension, not the entire measuring length. The tape can measure farther with support or a helper; that does not turn its 25-foot length into a 25-foot unsupported reach.

Features: useful basics rather than extra modes
The blade lock holds the extension while you read or mark a measurement. A belt clip helps keep the tool available between checks. These are practical features for repeated short measurements, although comfort, grip and one-handed control depend on the person and have not been evaluated here.
The coated blade is intended to resist wear, but it should not be treated as immune to grit, kinking or moisture. A legible scale and undamaged hook matter more to a measuring job than a shiny case. Inspect those working parts before relying on a measurement for a costly cut or order.

Research: the moving hook is intentional
STANLEY explains that the end hook’s movement compensates for its own thickness. Pulling it against an outside edge and pushing it against an inside surface place the hook differently, so the reference point remains appropriate to the measurement. A little designed travel is not automatically a defect.
That explanation does not mean every loose or bent hook is acceptable. If a tape has been dropped or the hook looks distorted, verify its readings against a suitable reference before using it for precision work. Do not glue the hook solid to eliminate normal movement.
Our buying interpretation is to prioritize the kind of work you do repeatedly. A 25-foot tape is versatile around a home, while someone mainly measuring small cabinet parts might prefer a smaller tool. Someone frequently bridging large gaps alone may value a different model’s longer documented standout. We have not performed a side-by-side comparison.

Safety: control retraction and leave the spring alone
STANLEY’s hand-tool safety guidance recommends safety goggles, warns against opening the case and advises against letting the blade retract at full speed. Guide it back under control and keep fingers clear of edges and the returning hook. Inspect for damage rather than forcing a kinked or split blade.
The manufacturer separately warns that the internal spring is wound at high tension and strongly discourages attempting to reset it yourself. If the rewind mechanism fails, use the manufacturer’s service guidance or replace the tool as appropriate. This review is not a repair procedure.
Keep a metal measuring blade away from energized electrical parts. A coated blade is not evidence of electrical insulation. Plan measurements so neither the extended tape nor the person holding it comes into contact with a hazard.

Buying: check the exact length and scale
Confirm 33-425 and B00002X2GQ, a 25-foot length, single-tool quantity, seller and return terms. PowerLock is a product family with other lengths and regional scales, so a similar chrome case does not establish that a listing is this model. Packaging and label graphics can also change over time.
Choose the 33-425 for general imperial measuring when the documented 7-foot standout meets your needs. Check that you can comfortably read the markings and operate the lock. Questions: common PowerLock buying checks
Is the case solid metal?
STANLEY describes a chrome-plated ABS case. Do not mistake the reflective finish for an all-metal housing.
Why does the end hook slide?
The designed movement compensates for hook thickness during inside and outside measurements. A bent or excessively loose hook still needs checking.
Does 25 feet mean 25 feet of standout?
No. Blade length and unsupported standout are different. STANLEY lists 7 feet of standout for this model.
Can I rewind the spring myself?
STANLEY strongly discourages that repair because the spring is under high tension. Follow its service guidance instead.
Is this a metric tape?
This review covers the 33-425 imperial 25-foot model. If you need metric markings, confirm a suitable regional or dual-scale model separately.
