How to Stop Sheets Balling Up in the Dryer

Start with a smaller load, open sheets and a mid-cycle untangle. Then decide whether dryer balls or a sheet detangler fit your bedding.

The quick answer: open, separate, check

Shake each sheet open before loading, leave enough room for it to tumble, and pause the dryer to separate any bundle. Remove pieces that are already dry. If the same fitted sheet keeps swallowing the rest, try drying it separately before buying an accessory.

A dry outside with a damp center calls for opening the bundle, not automatically selecting a hotter cycle. Follow the sheet's care label and your dryer's instructions. No detangling tool overrides those limits.

Try these three changes on your next load

  1. Undo the washer's twists. Take sheets out individually and shake them open. Do not transfer a tightly twisted bundle directly into the dryer.
  2. Reduce the load. Keep bulky towels and heavy bedding out of the sheet load. If a set fills your compact drum tightly, split it into smaller loads.
  3. Check before the cycle ends. Stop the machine normally, wait for the drum to stop, and separate nested pieces. Feel inside fitted corners and folded sections before deciding they need more drying.

Whirlpool advises separate sheet loads and warns against excessive heat or drying time. Its dryer guidance also recommends loading large pieces loosely. These are sensible starting points, rather than a guarantee that every fitted sheet will stay open.

Choose the next step by what you find

Whirlpool's use-and-care guidance explicitly allows rearranging large items during drying to reduce rolling and balling. There is no universal pause time: load size, fabric and machine differ.

Dryer balls or a sheet detangler?

Dryer balls are the simpler add-in. Whirlpool says wool or rubber dryer balls can help separate laundry and improve airflow. They are worth considering if you also use them for other compatible loads, but they do not hold a fitted sheet's corners apart. We have not measured drying-time or electricity savings.

A sheet detangler requires setup and compatibility checks. Wad-Free attaches four corners to a device, using one device per sheet. Its manufacturer excludes silk and rayon-containing sheets, including its listed bamboo/eucalyptus fabrics, and advises against weakened or damaged bedding. Check the exact fiber label and current instructions before buying. Its instructions also prohibit high washer spin speeds.

Read our Wad-Free for Bed Sheets two-pack review if your compatible sheets keep bundling after the free changes. Include the time needed to attach and remove each device in your decision. A tool that is awkward for your hands may be less useful than simply splitting the load.

Common questions

Should I use high heat to dry the center?

Use the permitted setting, then open the bundle so the damp sections can tumble. Raising heat without separating the layers can leave already dry fabric exposed to unnecessary heat.

Can I skip the dryer?

If the care label permits air drying and you have adequate space, spread sheets so air can reach them. Our indoor air-drying guide covers space and moisture management. Store bedding only when fully dry.
