Verdict: buy it for the ice, with maintenance in mind
The GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra is a reasonable candidate when nugget ice is a daily preference worth dedicating counter space and cleaning time to. It is harder to justify for occasional entertaining if ordinary freezer ice already meets your needs.
This research-based review covers stainless-steel XPIO13SWSS, ASIN B0F1Z3T3DS, with the 0.75-gallon side tank. We have not measured noise, production speed, ice texture, or long-term reliability. The main decision is whether you want this particular type of ice enough to manage a refillable water appliance.
Reasons to consider it
- Dedicated nugget-ice production
- Side tank reduces refill frequency
- Ultra adds filter and maintenance features
Trade-offs
- Regular sanitation and descaling
- Counter space plus ventilation required
- Bin does not keep ice frozen

Facts: the side-tank bundle and daily-output distinction
The selected listing is the Ultra with a 0.75-gallon side tank, not a newer one-gallon XL bundle. GE lists the model at 16.5 inches high, 13.43 inches wide and 17.5 inches deep. Check the complete installed arrangement, including the side tank, access and ventilation, before planning a tight countertop space.
GE advertises up to 38 pounds of production per day for the Ultra family. That is a rated cumulative output under specified conditions, not the quantity available immediately or the amount the bin holds. The manufacturer manual gives three pounds of ice storage. Treat daily output as a ceiling for comparison, not an event-catering guarantee.

Features: recirculating ice, filtration, and connected controls
The bin is not a freezer. GE explains that melted ice drains back into the reservoir for recirculation. This avoids treating melted ice as automatically lost water, but it also means a full-looking bin is not frozen long-term storage. If your plan depends on holding ice for later, account for separate freezer space and handling.
Ultra adds a scale-inhibiting water filter, a reusable rear air filter, maintenance notifications and a stainless scoop with magnetic storage. These can support upkeep; they do not make the machine maintenance-free or turn unsafe water into drinking water.
Wi-Fi and SmartHQ support scheduling and status functions. Consider those a convenience for when you want ice ready. They do not refill the tank, wash the bin, or carry out the hands-on parts of sanitation. If you dislike connected-appliance setup, evaluate whether the basic ice-making function alone earns the space.

Research: historical Opal attention, exact-model caution
GE’s June 20, 2024 launch release described the Opal family as viral when introducing Ultra. That is historical manufacturer promotion, not independent measurement of October 2026 social momentum. Social-commerce listings for newer XL packages do not establish demand or specifications for this 0.75-gallon ASIN.
The useful comparison is with your real ice routine: how often you refill trays or buy ice, where the machine could stand, and whether you will clean it on schedule. A compelling drink photograph cannot answer those questions. We do not turn customer ratings or brand claims into a score.
A dedicated ice maker also creates a permanent cleaning and storage job. Before buying, picture removing the bin, reaching the rear filter, draining water and carrying the tank to a sink. If those tasks require shifting several appliances each time, the installation is likely less convenient than it looks in a product photo.

Safety and maintenance: allow airflow and verify the schedule
The exact-model manual requires four inches of clearance at both sides and the rear, an upright level installation, indoor use, and an ambient range of 55–90°F. Its four-inch instruction takes priority over generic Opal support pages giving other clearances. Use potable water and keep vents unobstructed.
Descaling removes minerals; sanitizing is separate. For the four-button Ultra, unplug, remove and empty the side tank, then drain both hoses into a lower vessel holding at least two liters. Reconnect both hoses to the gray plug and replace accessory water filters with the original intake mesh. Never mix bleach with descaler or other cleaners.
For descaling, add one packet of Opal Citric Acid Powder Descaler to a full inner reservoir of hot water, handling it carefully to avoid burns. Plug in and hold Clean for the 55-minute cycle. For a separate sanitation cycle, use one teaspoon of bleach in a full reservoir of water and tap Clean for three minutes.
After either treatment, drain, reconnect the hoses, refill with fresh water and tap Clean for a three-minute rinse. Drain and repeat twice more with fresh water, completing three rinses. Finally reconnect the unlabeled hose to its plug and Tube B to the side-tank base. These button instructions apply to the four-button panel. Descale roughly every four weeks, adjusted for water hardness, and inspect the rear air filter at least every two months.
One important documentation inconsistency remains: GE’s no-round-button support article recommends weekly sanitation, while page 7 of the linked Rev. 2 manual prints “4 per week.” We cannot resolve that discrepancy from the documents. Confirm the sanitation schedule for your unit with GE; do not assume the filter removes the need to sanitize.
A targeted CPSC search on October 11, 2026 found no matching GE Profile Opal recall. That limited result is not a guarantee of safety or absence of later notices. Follow the supplied manual, use the proper grounded outlet, and obtain authorized service for refrigerant-system problems.

Questions: what changes everyday ownership
Does the bin keep the ice frozen?
No. GE says melted water recirculates. The bin is not a freezer for storing ice indefinitely.
Does 38 pounds mean that much ice is ready at once?
No. That is advertised daily production. The manufacturer manual lists a three-pound storage capacity, and actual output depends on conditions.
Is this the one-gallon XL bundle?
No. This review is for XPIO13SWSS with the 0.75-gallon side tank. Check the selected listing before ordering.
